Credentialing
The California credentialing roadmap
A clear, six-stage path overseen by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC). Here's what to expect — and how we help at every step.
Initial Assessment
Review your education, work history, and credentials to identify the right California credential pathway.
Document Gathering
Collect and translate transcripts, degree certificates, teaching credentials, and identification.
Foreign Evaluation
If applicable, submit transcripts to a CTC-approved evaluation agency.
Required Tests
CBEST (basic skills), CSET (subject matter), and RICA (for elementary) as required.
Application Submission
Online application via CTC, fingerprinting (Live Scan), and supporting documentation.
Credential Issued
Receive your California Preliminary Teaching Credential — typically valid five years.
Documents
What to prepare
We'll review everything for completeness before submission, but here's the standard checklist to get started.
- Sealed official transcripts (Bachelor's degree)
- Teaching credential / qualification from home country or state
- Foreign credential evaluation report (if applicable)
- Government-issued photo ID
- Live Scan fingerprint clearance (for U.S. residents)
- Test score reports (CBEST, CSET, RICA where required)
- English proficiency proof (TOEFL/IELTS if applicable)
Timeline
Most candidates complete credentialing in 4–9 months. Foreign-trained applicants may require additional time for evaluation and testing.
Fees
Expect roughly $100–$200 in CTC fees, plus exam costs (CBEST ~$102, CSET varies), Live Scan, and evaluation services if needed.
About the CTC
The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing issues all teaching credentials in the state and sets the standards every educator must meet.
